Retirement Plans: Making SSAFE a primary beneficiary of a qualified retirement plan, such as an IRA, 401K, 403B, or SEP, is by far the easiest way to benefit SSAFE in your estate plans and it costs nothing now. Just fill out a Change of Beneficiary Form, available online from your plan provider, and designate all or a percentage of your plan to Senior Stewards Acting for the Environment (SSAFE), EIN 87-1229514. If you have a spouse, he or she may have to sign a Waiver of Benefits. Consult your plan administrator or adviser. Send us a copy of the form and a current investment statement from your plan. You can take your Required Minimum Distributions from your plan during your lifetime. Any designated balance remaining in your plan will go to SSAFE tax-free at your death.

Life Insurance: You can name SSAFE a primary beneficiary of a whole or variable life policy (term policies do not qualify). Simply fill out a Change of Beneficiary Form available online from your insurer and designate Senior Stewards Acting for the Environment (SSAFE), EIN 87-1229514 as the beneficiary. Then send us a copy of the form and arrange for annual policy statements to be sent to SSAFE. Beneficiary designations do not qualify for an income tax deduction now, but you will have the satisfaction of knowing that SSAFE will benefit later.

Use the form on the right to notify us of your intent to name SSAFE as a beneficiary or request more information. ➡️

Adding a bequest provision to your will or revocable trust is a great way to provide long-term support to SSAFE. Here is some sample language to share with your attorney:

“I give, devise and bequeath to Senior Stewards Acting For the Environment (SSAFE), a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization (EIN #87-1229514), incorporated in the state of Illinois, the sum of $___________ (or __% of the rest and residual of my estate) to be used for its general unrestricted purposes.”

If you wish to specify a purpose or otherwise restrict your gift, please consult with SSAFE to make sure your gift can be used exactly as you intend.

Use the form on the right to notify us of your intent to add a bequest to SSAFE or request more information. ➡️

There are many ways to make an estate-related or deferred gift to SSAFE. SSAFE accepts a variety of life-income gifts and gifts of tangible personal and real property.

The strength of SSAFE comes from the dedication of its Board members, Chapter Leaders, and volunteers across the country who give their time, experience, and creativity to advancing sustainability in senior living communities. Their leadership and initiative are what make SSAFE’s programs and partnerships possible.

Supporting this volunteer network are two full-time staff — Michelle Goodwin, Executive Director, and Jenna Woodill, Program Coordinator — who coordinate national programming, communications, and chapter support. Although SSAFE has no physical headquarters, operating a fully virtual organization requires several software systems to manage the website, membership database, online events, email communications, and other administrative functions.

The 2025 annual budget exceeds $200,000, and SSAFE seeks to meet its budget obligations through the generous support of members and donors. Your contribution helps sustain the people, systems, and collaboration that make SSAFE’s nationwide impact possible.
