Plastics, Like Diamonds are Forever: Friday, October 3rd at 11 AM ET / 10 AM PT

When Captain Charles Moore, a world-leading plastics research scientist and long-time seafarer, first sailed into an expanse of floating debris in the North Pacific in the late 1990s, he uncovered what is now known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and brought worldwide attention to the scale of plastic pollution. His discovery revealed how plastics, solid carbon derived from petroleum, persist in the environment and threaten ocean life. This presentation will trace Captain Moore’s background and the story of his discovery, while also examining the emerging possibilities and ventures on the horizon that may shape a different future for our relationship with plastic.
