Captain Charles J. Moore will share the story of his 1997 discovery of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and how it led to his pioneering research on microplastics and nanoplastics. In his presentation, he will also discuss plastics as a solid form of carbon from petroleum, introduce the concept of our “plastic footprint,” and how to make plastic “benign by design.” He will also examine emerging efforts to understand and address the impacts of plastic pollution on our air, soil, and water, and even outer space!
