Why Focus on GHGs?
To keep our planet livable for future generations, we must reduce the greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. But right now, we are steadily adding GHGs, not reducing them. To reverse this situation, every organization, including all senior living communities, will need to reduce their fossil fuel use to zero (or very close to zero).
The need is urgent. SSAFE’s mission statement incorporates this need. It states:
“To address the climate crisis with the urgency it requires, SSAFE chapters educate and partner with their committees and administrations, with other chapters, and with other senior living communities to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.”
It is our intent that the SSAFE Pathway will provide the information your senior living community needs to begin making progress toward net-zero emissions by 2050. This includes attention to reducing the rate at which greenhouse gases are added to the atmosphere, not only reaching a balance point in the future.
