Case Study: Collington Peak Energy Use Pilot

Case Study: Collington Peak Energy Use Pilot

Summary:
Conduct a pilot program to engage Independent Living residents in reduced energy use during the hottest summer months of 2023 and target the days and hours when our regional grid manager anticipated peak demand.

Peak Shaving: “Peak shaving” is an odd term! You may start to hear this term more often in your community. It is a handy and catchy term to describe saving energy on high-demand days. Think of a chart showing energy use during the day. It looks a bit like a mountain peak. On particularly high-demand days, the energy used at the top of the peak is not only much more expensive, but it is also likely to come from backup power generators such as coal-fired power plants (“dirty energy”.) If everyone agrees to significantly reduce energy usage at the “peak” then you are effectively “shaving” off the top of the peak.
