SSAFE is in the process of changing the make-up and selection of our Board of Directors. Formerly, each chapter presented their own choice for board member to the SSAFE Board of Directors. Every chapter was represented. We are now too large to sustain a board member from each chapter. In the future we will have fifteen at-large board members in addition to the officers.
In the new structure, which will begin on January 1st, 2026, each at-large member will serve a three-year term, renewable once, for a possible total of six years. At-large members may come from any chapter and any member may nominate someone or they may nominate themselves. The Governance Committee will first read through all applications, then interview a group of semifinalists, and lastly a group of finalists. Once the system is up and running, we will recommend five members each year for approval by the current Board of Directors. Those five members may be new Directors or they may be beginning their second terms. At the end of six years all board members must rotate off the board for at least one year. (Note: in the beginning, several board positions will be for less than three years.)
We invite SSAFE members to submit your suggestions for individuals who might be well-suited to serve as a director. We believe that many of you will have had experience with those people at your chapter who have demonstrated strong leadership ability. Below we have provided information that may help you to decide who you might nominate.

Duties
- Be an active member of a SSAFE chapter
- Be available and willing to serve a full three-year term
- Become familiar with SSAFE’s mission, goals, and organizational structure
- Participate in at least one of SSAFE’s committees, work groups, or task groups
- Attend and participate in all monthly board meetings
- Be available for ad hoc assignments
